The first leg took us to Calais Airport (LFAC) to clear customs. This time, the French customs officers were already waiting for us upon arrival. After a quick check and paying the landing fees, we were ready to head across the Channel.<\/p><p>The weather was ideal \u2014 clear blue skies, no turbulence, and not a single cloud. The student handled navigation for this leg using only a classic VFR paper chart \u2014 a fundamental skill that remains essential, even in today\u2019s increasingly digital cockpit environment. The crossing over the Channel went smoothly. We flew at FL75 \u2014 high enough for safety, low enough for stunning views.<\/p><p>Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised to meet two fellow EACm flying club members who had landed earlier. The field was bustling with activity; we chatted with local pilots and enjoyed a bite at the charming airport restaurant.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">While cruising, I did a quick calculation and realized with a smile that I had just passed the <strong> 1,000 flight hour <\/strong> milestone \u2014 a symbolic achievement that added even more meaning to this day.<\/p><p>The student navigated this second leg using VOR beacons \u2014 a great way to practice radio navigation in UK airspace.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d6b8b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0d6b8b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Tip:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e66c18e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e66c18e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Make sure you report the flight to the British Border Police on time. This must be 2 hours before arrival. You can easily do this using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.submit-general-aviation-report.service.gov.uk\/welcome\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GAR website<\/a>.<\/li><li>A lot of British airports can facilitate customs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/general-aviation-operators-and-pilots-notification-of-flights\/general-aviation-report-guidance-accessible#AnnexB:~:text=aviation%20report%20instructions-,Annex%20A%3A%20Designated%20and%20Regulated%20aerodromes,-Customs%20%26%20Excise%3A%20C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Have a look at the complete list of airports on the GAR website<\/a>. So choose a fun destination right away instead of making a stop at an airport with not much to do or see!<\/li><li>During the crossing of the channel in a SEP, you are out of gliding distance for quite some time, so don't forget about the life vests! If you can, take a life raft to increase your chances of survival in that worst case scenario. Also, mention your life vest and life raft info on the flight plan!<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column Headcorn to Ostend via GPS<span style=\"font-size: 25px;font-weight: 600;letter-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/h3><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-449f2b4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"449f2b4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">After a hearty lunch and a short break, we set course for Ostend (EBOS). This third leg brought us back over the Channel, now using the built-in Garmin G3X GPS system in the Bristell BR23. This modern avionics suite offers a clear, intuitive, and highly accurate navigation experience.<\/p><p>We followed the coastlines of southern England and Belgium, and eventually intercepted the ILS for a straight-in approach into Ostend \u2014 an excellent training opportunity, even for a PPL student without an instrument rating.<\/p><p>After a smooth landing, we were warmly welcomed at the FBO, passed through customs again, and made a short stop before the final leg.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8a5d5f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8a5d5f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Tip:<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-366103f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"366103f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><b>Oostend airport does not allow aircraft that fly on AVGAS 100LL as of April 30, 2025 (NOTAM EBBRYNYN A1458\/25)!!!\u00a0<\/b><\/li><li>Make sure you inform the airport about your customs request on time.
